I left tiktok today
People are shocked to hear I left TikTok today. GaryVee says everyone should be on TikTok right now. The numbers are compelling. My audience is there: What could I be thinking?
I’ll tell you what: My audience is also on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube at in-person events, and connected to me through my extended network. Pouring into any one of these platforms with sincerity and consistency will yield better results than brainstorming TikToks I won’t actually post from sun up to sun down.
I think of TikTok in this moment like Clubhouse in April 2021 when it had 10M weekly active users. I told people it was transforming my career and my network: And it was and it did.
But I also know successful business owners who never logged on. Or who hopped on, felt it wasn’t a fit and left. I also know people languishing on the platform now that it’s clearly past it’s prime ROI for the majority of users.
We’ve seen studies that social media can be harmful; and I’ll tell you. I’ve never felt as insecure as I do looking at my “For You” Page. (Being told I’m “not doing it right” doesn’t make me feel any better.) My For You Page is marketers with less experience sharing 60-second videos about intro hooks that’ll help anyone make 5-figures a month. It’s women who are 10 years and 20 pounds thinner than me “looking hot.”
Consuming TikTok content is the worst decision I’ve made regarding my personal self esteem in some time.
If a client came to me and wanted TikTok strategy, I know exactly who to connect them with.
Everything doesn’t have to be my thing: even what’s “so hot right now.”
And here’s what’s a really hot take: While everyone is on TikTok, I’m making connections in Web3. I don’t want to know what’s now I want to know what’s next.
We can add TikTok to paid social ads on the list of marketing tactics that I’d hire out. I’ll pour into platform where I see and feel ROI—and I’ll advise my clients to do the same.
