pick 1: texts or social media comments

I read a tweet (and so many ensuing +1 comments) last year that I haven’t been able to get off my mind.

It said something to the effect of:

“So you can reply to comments on your social media posts but can’t return texts in your phonebook? Where are your priorities?”

Please, LET ME TELL YOU.

  • I *asked* for the comments on my social media posts- and I’m honoring that.

  • I put time into creating that content.

  • I am striving to create engagement and community.

When I ask someone to follow me- and give me their most precious asset (their time), to listen to me, to reflect with me, to witness what I create and join me - yes I’m going to write back.

I have 27 unread text messages (the number was once 10X that), because text messages are often things people need **from me**

The people who love me will still love me if it takes me a days (or two) to write back. The group chat? We’ll all see it- we don’t need an immediate response to nudge the algorithm and push it out to all who could use it). And you if you have my number, and you need me-need me? Call me. You can.

You don’t *earn* an immediate response because you have my phone number—and you don’t not *deserve* one because we connected through social media.

And everyone +1’ing that tweet like “yes, values, phone book first 🙌🏼” - in my opinion - doesn’t value the community they’ve asked to follow them on social.
